Set up a Neighbornode on your street

Want to set up a Neighbornode of your own? It's easy - anyone can set up and operate a Neighbornode anywhere in the world in just a few minutes. To do this, simply
  1. Buy a Linksys WRT54G router (you can get one cheap on this ebay page or at J&R).
  2. Download the Neighbornode firmware: WRT54G or WRT54GS (note: this firmware is beta and currently only works on Linksys version 3 and below, NOT v4).
  3. Download instructions for installing the firmware on your WRT54G.
  4. Use the Linksys's web interface to add Neighbornode to the router, then configure the router as you normally would, with a few additional clicks to configure Neighbornode. Instructions for this will be emailed with your firmware.
  5. (optional) Buy a high-gain antenna for your router, to give your Neighbornode better signal strength and a better radius.
Once you've got your Neighbornode configured, place the node antenna in a window overlooking the street, or close to neighboring apartments or houses. Avoid placing the antenna near trees (trees kill the signal). Set the node's SSID to 'Neighbornode' to broadcast your presence to your neighbors. That's it! Enjoy your Neighbornode, meet your neighbors, tell people about events, post photos - do whatever you like.
